How to Play

The default Durban League rules for a 2–6 player game of South African Crazy 8.

1Cards & Deal

Use a 54-card deck: a standard 52-card pack plus two Jokers.

  • Each player receives eight cards.
  • The remaining cards form the draw pile.
  • Turn over one ordinary card to begin the discard pile.

2Your Turn

Play one legal card or draw one card from the draw pile.

  • A legal card normally matches the active suit or the top card's rank.
  • If the drawn card is playable, you may play it immediately or keep it and end your turn.
  • After drawing, you may not play a different card that was already in your hand.

3Matching & Active Suit

The active suit normally matches the suit of the top discard. When an 8 is played, the player chooses the next active suit.

  • Cards may be played by matching suit or rank.
  • An 8 may be played on any non-penalty card.
  • By default, an 8 may be played on another 8.
  • During a Take 2 or Joker penalty chain, ordinary matching rules do not apply.

4Penalty Chains

Take 2 penalties may be continued with another 2. Joker penalties cannot be stacked and must be blocked with a legal Ace or drawn in full.

  • Against a 2, play another 2, use a legal Ace Block, or draw the full penalty.
  • Against a Joker, use a legal Ace Block or draw the full five-card penalty.
  • Each additional 2 adds two cards. Joker penalties do not stack.
  • A Joker cannot be played to continue a Take 2 penalty, and a 2 cannot be played against a Joker penalty.
  • You may not draw only part of a penalty.
  • After drawing penalty cards, your turn ends immediately.

5Call 3, 2, 1

You must make a call each time playing a card reduces your hand to three, two or one card.

  • Each call is a separate requirement.
  • Drawing cards does not trigger a call. If you voluntarily draw and immediately play that drawn card, no call is required.
  • Missing a required call gives an immediate two-card penalty.
  • The missed-call penalty is not a Take 2 chain and cannot be blocked by an Ace.

6Winning

The first player to legally play their final card wins.

  • The final card may be an action card under the default rules.
  • A final action card does not apply its special effect.
  • A missed call must be resolved before victory can be awarded.

7Two-Player Effects

Reverse and Skip behave differently in a two-player game.

  • 7 reverses direction, but has no practical effect on turn order; play passes to the other player as normal.
  • Jack skips the opponent, so the player who used it plays again.
